We closed school in December 2021 for Christmas holidays. When I reached home, my mum
told me that we shall be going to the village for the Christmas. I was very happy because at home
we have big fields and cousins to play with. My younger twin sisters, Ariella and Arianna could
not understand why I was very happy.
It was a wonderful evening and I started thinking about how being in the village is always fun.
The stories from my great grandparents to my grandparents and fun games we do with our
cousins. The morning arrived very fast and we left Kisumu for our village in Gem, Siaya. The
journey took long because I wanted to reach there faster.
After few minutes, we arrived home, everyone was happy including my grandparents. After
greeting all of them, I asked for permission from my mum to go and play with my sisters and
cousins. She told me to be careful because the sun was shining so hard. Because we really
wanted to play, we went.
I heard my 2 year old sister celebrating, we have sweets….we have sweets they are green and
red. I didn’t think of what they called sweets to be red peppers. We played without thinking of
them. I heard my sisters cry out loud, both of them were scratching their faces and rubbing their
eyes. The little girls had eaten the black pepper thinking that it is sweet.
The whole family crowded the area with my dad and mum laughing as we were all crying. My
father said that this was adventure in the village and we should be careful with everything that
we see.
Ariella and Arianna were both taken into a big basin of cold water to reduce their pain. I was
afraid and since then, I have learnt to keep my hands to myself and ask for help when I don’t
know anything.
